Highlights and Winners of the Broadcast Film Critics Awards
By Mali Elfman

Last night I had the privilege of attending the Broadcast Film Critics Awards, which we live twittered here and was broadcasted on VH1. The night went much more quickly than I expected. Normally award shows have a tendency to drag on, but this one was trimmed down to the bare necessities and moved right along. Some of the highlights of the show include when Anne Hathaway tied with Meryl Streep for an award and said that she was so excited it “felt like her gums were receding,” Viola Davis accepting Meryl Streeps award and saying “the one person I know Meryl would really like to thank above all is me,” and Jason Alexander asking Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie if they would consider adopting him as he noticed they didn’t have any Jews in the family yet.
Slumdog Millionaire was definitely the big winner of the night (deservedly so), racking up Best Picture, Best Director, Best Young Actor/Actress, and Best Composer. Milk was not far behind with two wins for Best Actor and Best Ensemble.
Check out the winners and more about the event below…
The most interesting part of the night for me was the arrival. They have you pull your car up to where there are a few bleachers full of people and when you get out they all cheer. Now, none of them had any clue who I was. So although the cheers were nice, I wondered what the deal was. I later found out that they have someone standing in front of the bleachers orchestrating the cheers, so that they synchronize with your first step out of your vehicle with a “WOOOOOOOOOOOO.” Pretty crazy huh? So just when everyone is feeling good about themselves, you find out it’s FAKE. Hey, I’ll take what I can get.
As for the event itself, it was full of a lot of famous faces that all seemed to know one another. I eventually found someone who did recognize me. I went to high school with one of the hostesses. She told me that while serving Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie someone had to watch her pour all the drinks to ensure nothing “extra” went into them. How crazy is that?
Enough with my ramblings, here are the nominees and winners…
