Three castings to report in three days for the Sly Stallone action flick, The Expendables. First Whitaker, then Kingsley, and now according to Variety, Mickey Rourke has signed on to the project. Is this script that good? Has Stallone’s writing reverted back to original Rocky status? With the acclaim Rourke has been receiving for his portrayal in The Wrestler, I don’t think he would damage his comeback by signing up for something sub-par.
Rourke will play an unscrupulous arms dealer who becomes the go-to guy for a group of mercenaries planning to topple a South American dictator.
In recounting his rise to Oscar contention with “The Wrestler,” Rourke has credited Stallone for helping him get back in the business at a low ebb, when Stallone met him at a restaurant and gave him a role in “Get Carter.”
The cast currently includes Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Randy Couture, and Dolph Lungdren. There has been word that Jean-Claude Van Damme was offered a role in the film, but decided to pass on it. If he would have accepted the offer, it would have been epic, but perhaps he likes being king of the straight to DVD market.
Filming for The Expendables begins in March and will be shot on location in Brazil.
