Our favorite Aussie Hugh Jackman, is a busy man! With his highly anticipated Wolverine prequel set for release in May, and his new Oscar hosting gig set for February, he’s got a lot on his plate. According to Variety, this busy schedule may have forced the actor to pull out of talks to star in Steven Soderbergh’s developing project, Cleo. Jackman was eyeing a part in the 3-D musical, which would have placed him as Marc Antony, opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones‘ Cleopatra.

No deal had been signed as the ambitious $30 million project is completing its financing, but Soderbergh asked his “Traffic” star Zeta-Jones to play Cleopatra and wanted new Oscar host Jackman to play her lover, the Roman general Marc Antony (Daily Variety, October 24, 2008).

Discussions are reportedly in the works for the role of Julius Caesar to be played by Ray Winstone, the “Beowulf” star who just completed shooting the Martin Campbell-directed “Edge of Darkness” with Mel Gibson.

Why am I not surprised that they want Ray Winstone for Caesar? He finds a way to creep himself into anything that has “epic” subject matter. As for Jackman, this kind of sucks, because he is a very talented singer. I think he could have pulled this one off.
