Yes, it’s true. Planet of the Apes may be back with another installment.  According to CHUD, the co-chairman of Fox Filmed Entertainment Tom Rothman, stated that a prequel may be in the works for the Apes franchise which first began forty years ago.

We are very close at Fox on a new Apes script- this one a kind of prequel story before the first story, with a return to the social thematics that mark the first one, but with an entirely contemporary setting – Earth 2009.

More on the sequels after the jump.

They’re leaning more towards a prequel for the 1968 version, which starred Charlton Heston, as opposed to Tim Burton’s 2001 Mark Wahlberg remake. I’m personally interested in what they would title this new film. They’ve had Planet of the Apes, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Escape From the Planet of the Apes, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, and Battle for the Planet of the Apes.  Whew, I think thats all of them! I’m going to keep a close eye on the developments for this “prequel.” Is the studio insane for trying to keep this franchise alive? Perhaps they are a little crazy, crazy like a Fox (pun well intended)!
