Get Smart

Starring: Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Alan Arkin and Dwayne Johnson

One of the better comedies of the summer hits DVD today in all its action and joke-packed glory.  This edition boasts “62% More Jokes”, a number so arbitrary it’s probably true.  These come in the form of deleted scenes and improvised line alterations from second city alums Arkin and Carrell.

This film also contains the somewhat creepy relationship between Carell and Hathaway, a growing trend in film these days, finding middle-aged men pairing up with 20-something females.  One can only assume this was the fantastical plan of several Hollywood execs trying to start a reverse cougar trend.  Whatever the case, it casts a pall over any romance using this odd technique.  Hathaway is great in the movie, but couldn’t they have found a single comedienne over the age of thirty or are they no longer allowed to appear in films?

Kung Fu Panda

Voices Of: Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Seth Rogen, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu and Ian McShane

Skidoosh!  “Kung Fu Panda”, another of the better summer comedies, live action or animated, brings its kid-friendly martial arts stylings to DVD today.  It’s also available in a special two-pack with something called “The Secrets of the Furious Five”.  Not clear if it’s a pseudo-sequel or just something cobbled together out of deleted scenes.  Probably the latter.

“Fraggle Rock” – The Complete Series

Time to dance your cares away and save your worries for another day as the entire series of Jim Henson’s “Fraggle Rock” hits DVD with a 20 disc set of every episode plus several behind the scenes featurettes plus an interview with its late creator.  Oddly, it doesn’t come with a matching bong.  Strange.

Waterworld – Extended Edition”

Just when you thought you couldn’t get enough of Kevin Costner with gills behind his ears this DVD adds 40 extra minutes.  Hopefully those all contain Dennis Hopper in his campy eye-patched glory.

I mean what other Special Edition DVD is worth mentioning this week?  Star Wars?

Making his second appearance in this section is the HSTDR’s patron saint Lou Diamond Phillips.  This week he stars in “Termination Point” as a deranged scientist who steals the government’s secret time travel technology, something he plans on using as some sort of weapon.  Luckily for America we have Jason Priestley as Special Agent Caleb Smith to track him down.
