A mute woman gets raped twice in one night, then goes on a vigilante spree. She kills men, chops up their bodies and drops the spare parts in various trash cans around New York City. Like every good vigilante, she gets shot down in a blaze of glory. “Ms. 45″ is the second best rape/revenge movie ever made (right under “I Spit on Your Grave” and right above “Last House on the Left”). It plays at the Grindhouse Film Festival Tonight: March 11, 7:30 at the New Beverly.
If you’re looking for a more “cultured” experience, the Egyptian Theater pays homage to Italian horror maestro Mario Bava this week. Bava was the director who coined the combination of sleaze and sophistication. He pioneered an era of Italian exploitation cinema from the late 60’s through the early 80’s. His films boasted killer cinematography, penetrating scores, and tons of death and sex-appeal to fill in the blanks. The fun kicks off this Thursday with “Black Sunday:” March 13, 7:30 at the Egyptian Theater.
There are a TON of Bava movies on the big screen this month. If you want to see the film that spawned the entire “Friday the 13th” franchise, check out “Bay of Blood” and “Beyond the Door II,” the latter is probably the most disturbing haunted house movie ever. See the entire schedule of Bava films at the Egyptian.
Speaking of “Friday the 13th,” the New Beverly is offering up a double dose of 80’s slashers this week, with “Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter” and “Final Exam.” For those of you who haven’t seen all 10 “Friday the 13th” movies, I’ll save you the journey: “The Final Chapter” is the best. This film boasts some of the most unforgettable characters in any 80’s horror movie, most notably a high school reject played by Crispin Glover, who goes from totally geek to totally sheik (before taking a butcher knife to the face). Also, Corey Feldman plays a boy obsessed with horror movies who goes insane with a machete. And of course, the big guy with the hockey mask goes insane with a slew of weapons, including a harpoon gun and corkscrew. The 80’s slasher blast commences Friday:
March 14, 7:30 at the New Beverly. Also Saturday at 3:50 and 7:30.
