When you see the trailer for The Spiderwick Chronicles the first thing that comes to mind is another Lord of the Rings/Narina knock off. That can’t be further from the truth. Sure Spiderwick has goblins and other fantasy characters, but that is where the similarities end.
Spiderwick actually takes place in our world, not some fantasy world (Lord of the Rings) or parallel world (Narnia). The plot is pretty simple so it’s enjoyable for kids, but also for adults.
Helen Grace (Mary-Louise Parker) moves her family, twin sons Jared and Simon Grace (Freddie Highmore) and daughter Mallory Grace (Sarah Bolger), out of New York and into the secluded Spiderwick house to escape her problems. As soon as they get there things start to go missing and accidents start occurring. With no reasonable explanation for whats happening, troubled Jared gets the blame.
Jared ends up finding a secret room containing the Spiderwick Chronicles and opens it. Little did he know that opening a seemingly normal book (albeit with a warning attached) would lead to a great adventure. Now Jared and his family are fighting to protect the book and their lives from the evil ogre Mulgarath (Nick Nolte) and his evil goblin minions. Will the Jared be able to protect the book and defeat Molgarath?
Director Mark Waters (Mean Girls & Just Like Heaven) did a commendable job with the Spiderwick Chronicles and Freddie Highmore does an excellent job playing the twin brothers (Jared/Simon) keeping both personalities separate. He played the roles so good it has you questioning whether or not he actually has a twin in real life.
If your planning on seeing Step Up 2 I suggest you screw your head on right and go catch The Spiderwick Chronicles instead. Trust me it will be more enjoyable than another crappy dancing movie.
